Third Reality MT1

$35
typical price on Amazon · in stock · one retrofit actuator, 2 AAA batteries, no wall plate replaced
$45 under your budget

Across 14 sources only this one needs no wiring: it snaps over the switch you already have, so neutral wires and landlords stop mattering.

Third Reality MT1
Third Reality MT1MATTER · THREAD · NO WIRING

Fit ledger — need → measured evidence

RENTING
A mechanical actuator sits on top of the existing toggle or rocker — no wiring, fully reversible, and the original switch is untouched underneath.
NO NEUTRAL QUESTION
It never touches house wiring, so the pre-1985 no-neutral problem that rules out most of this category simply does not apply.
UNDER $80
$35 — $45 of headroom, and nothing else to buy if a Thread border router is already in the house.
ONE ROOM, ONE SWITCH
2 AAA batteries last about a year — that is the entire maintenance burden of a single-room install.
APPLE HOME
Matter-over-Thread — pairs to HomeKit, Alexa, Google and SmartThings through any border router, no vendor hub.

The catch — co-equal billing, always

It is useless without a Thread border router. The MT1 is a Matter endpoint, not a hub — with no HomePod mini, Apple TV 4K, Nest Hub 2nd gen or eero 6+ in the house it connects to nothing. It also only switches: no dimming, and batteries to change each year.

Dealbreaker? Runner-up №1 (Zigbee Gen3) if your hub is an Echo instead ↓

Every product has a catch. Verdicts that hide it are how bad buys happen.

Don't buy this if…

  • you want smart bulbs (individual lamp control) rather than in-wall switchesSmart light bulb verdict →
  • you need outdoor/weatherproof smart switching for landscape lightingSmart plug verdict →
  • you want a smart plug (outlet-level control) rather than wall switch replacementSmart plug verdict →
  • you are shopping for EU/UK switches (different form factor and voltage)

Wrong product for you is still a bad buy. These are the cases where we'd send you somewhere else.

Traps — this verdict avoids

Why the Third Reality MT1 is right for you

It avoids every trap below — and for just me, under $80, it is the pick because it delivers:

Renting No neutral question Under $80 One room, one switch Apple Home
Trap 01

The pre-1985 neutral

Homes built before ~1985 often have no neutral wire at the switch box, and most Wi-Fi switches (Leviton D215S, Kasa HS200, Tapo S505D, Aqara S100) then do not work at all. Pull the switch and look for a capped bundle of white wires before you buy anything.

Trap 02

The hub is part of the price

Lutron Caseta needs a $60-80 Smart Hub, Zigbee and Z-Wave need their own coordinator, and Matter-over-Thread needs a border router already in the house. Only Matter-over-Wi-Fi and plain Wi-Fi switches add nothing.

Trap 03

Price the pair, not the switch

Multi-way is a second purchase on almost everything — Lutron a Pico, Kasa the HS210, Inovelli an Aux switch; only the Zooz ZEN77 drives an existing dumb switch. And check pack size: the Tapo S505D price is a 2-pack, every other price in this category is a single unit.
