Wirecutter's top pick and the lightest machine here at 4.8 lbs — the one wand you can hold overhead without your arm giving out.

Fit ledger — need → measured evidence

HOLDING IT UP
4.8 lbs — 24% lighter than the V15 — the difference between doing the ceiling corners and skipping them.
ONE-BED APARTMENT
Still removed 98.6% of debris in Vacuum Wars testing despite the smaller 150 AW motor.
THIN WALLS
52-59 dB — one of the quietest cordless vacuums sold, usable at 11pm without a neighbour complaint.
A FLAT IN ONE PASS
60 minutes in Eco, and the Fluffy Optic laser head shows you the dust you'd otherwise walk past on hard floors.
ALLERGENS
Whole-machine filtration traps 99.99% of particles down to 0.3 microns.

The catch — co-equal billing, always

Its bin is 0.35 litres — the smallest here — and it costs almost as much as the Gen5detect. At ~$644 against ~$661 you are paying flagship money for 150 AW and a bin you empty two or three times per clean. Buy it for the weight, or don't buy it.

Dealbreaker? Runner-up №1 is 5.0 lbs with 270 AW and 105 minutes ↓

Every product has a catch. Verdicts that hide it are how bad buys happen.

Don't buy this if…

Wrong product for you is still a bad buy. These are the cases where we'd send you somewhere else.

Traps — this verdict avoids

Why the Dyson V12 Detect Slim is right for you

It avoids every trap below — and for just me, no price cap, it is the pick because it delivers:

Holding it up One-bed apartment Thin walls A flat in one pass Allergens
Trap 01

The runtime on the box is Eco mode

Battery claims are measured in Eco with a non-motorized tool. With the brushroll running on Auto you get 40-60% of the number: the Gen5detect's 70 minutes is about 40 on Auto and 15 on Boost, and the Tineco A90S's 105 minutes is measured with the crevice tool, not the main brush.

Trap 02

Tier no longer predicts price

Mid-2026 reset this category. The Dyson Gen5detect fell to ~$661 — below the V15 Detect Plus at ~$790 — while the Tineco Pure ONE S70 climbed from ~$399 to ~$569. Prices swing 20-40% during sales events, so re-check any figure more than a few weeks old.

Trap 03

The battery is the real running cost

Filters are washable but need replacing roughly annually, and the lithium-ion pack is the largest recurring cost on any cordless. Use the manufacturer's own: CPSC has warned consumers to stop using third-party packs sold as Dyson-compatible after fires, and in July 2026 recalled about 3,660 Rowenta cordless vacuums over fire and burn hazards. None of the picks here is under recall as of 2026-08-06.
