■ The catch — co-equal billing, always
It is an open frame. ABS and ASA are permanently off the table — they warp and vent fumes without a chamber. And at $419 this is now the most expensive 4-color machine on the card: Elegoo's enclosed Centauri Carbon 2 Combo does 4 colors for $399. The extra $20 buys Bambu's ecosystem, which is cloud-connected and closed by default.

Traps — this verdict avoids
Why the Bambu Lab A1 Combo is right for you
It avoids every trap below — and for just me, under $500, it is the pick because it delivers:
The Combo is the product
The same printer name sells bare or as a "Combo", and the multi-material unit (AMS lite, CANVAS, CFS) adds $100–$250. The A1 mini is $234 bare and $339 with the AMS lite. A bare-unit price never supports a multi-color claim — every price here names the exact bundle it buys.
Open frames can't do ABS
Open-frame printers cannot safely print ABS or ASA — those materials warp without a heated chamber and vent fumes that need containment. If ABS, ASA or nylon is on your project list, you need an enclosure, not a bigger bed.
Color burns filament
Every color change purges the nozzle into a waste tower: AMS, CANVAS and CFS systems throw away 5–15% of the filament in a print. Four-color printing costs more than four spools.
