IPX4 is not a rinse rating
The ladder is exact: IPX4 is sweat and splashes, IPX7 is 30 minutes at 1 metre, IP68 is dust-tight plus deeper immersion — and none of it makes a Bluetooth bud a swim bud, because Bluetooth does not propagate through water. Lap swimming needs an IP68 unit with onboard MP3 storage, not the best-rated earbud in the shop.
The rating is a spec, not a warranty
An IP number is measured on a new unit in fresh water. Limited warranties cover manufacturing defects, not sweat or liquid damage, and salt, sunscreen and chlorine eat the seals over time. Only the silicone tips are replaceable — hooks and wing fins are moulded into the shell — so a $49-90 bud you replace often beats a $249 one you cannot.
A price without a generation is meaningless
Sony launched the WF-1000XM6 in February 2026 at $329.99, which pushed the WF-1000XM5 to $248 clearance, and both are still listed — while "XM6" listings around $130 are Renewed units, not new ones.
