Marketing decibels
Boxes in this tier now advertise 42 dB (CMF), 52 dB (Anker) and 56 dB (QCY) of noise cancelling. Every brand measures differently, and SoundGuys' independent work puts real attenuation here at roughly 20 dB against 30+ dB on flagships. Budget ANC removes constant hum; it does not quiet voices or an aircraft cabin.
The battery number is the case
"50 hours" is the case total with ANC off. The Soundcore P31i is 10 hours per charge, and 8 with ANC on; LDAC roughly halves the EarFun Air 2, from 9 hours per charge to 5.5. Worst hidden number on this card: the Moondrop Space Travel is about 4 hours per charge with no IP rating at all, despite a 4.9/5 tuning score.
Every box claims AI mics
Microphone quality is the most oversold spec under $50 and the biggest real complaint. "AI noise reduction" branding is on nearly every pick, and wind is where all of them fail.
