The closest screen-to-paper reading there is — 7" 300 PPI glare-free e-ink, IPX8 waterproof, weeks per charge. The consensus top pick across 7 expert guides.
Fit ledger — need → measured evidence
■ The catch — co-equal billing, always
It's black-and-white and Amazon-only. No color for comics, and library books or EPUBs need Calibre conversion — the Kindle store is the only frictionless path. If you borrow from your library or want color, this is the wrong reader.
Dealbreaker? Kobo Libra Colour adds color + one-tap library lending ↓
■ Every product has a catch. Verdicts that hide it are how bad buys happen.

Traps — this verdict avoids
Why the Kindle Paperwhite (12th Gen) is right for you
It avoids every trap below — and for just me, under $250, it is the pick because it delivers:
Color e-ink is soft
Color mode drops to ~150 PPI, half the 300 PPI of black-and-white e-ink. Kaleido 3 shows ~4,096 colors — fine for comic covers, visibly softer than any LCD. Only pay the color premium if you actually read illustrated content.
Ecosystem lock-in
Kindles lock you to Amazon's store. Loading EPUB or library books means converting files in Calibre; a Kobo reads EPUB, PDF and 15+ formats natively and lends from your library in one tap. Choose the ecosystem before the hardware.
Battery claims are optimistic
'Weeks per charge' assumes 30 minutes a day with Wi-Fi off and a low frontlight. Leave wireless on or push the light to max and weeks becomes days. Real-world e-ink battery is a fraction of the box number.
