A WiFi sensor can't stop a sprinkler

Sprinkler controllers read a normally-closed dry contact on their "S" terminals — a binary hold-watering interrupt, not a moisture percentage. No ECOWITT, THIRDREALITY, RAINPOINT, GARDENA or Moen sensor produces that contact, which is why a $24 sensor and a $187 kit are not competing products. Rachio 3 and Gen 2 *do* accept a soil sensor — a wired one. Orbit B-hyve accepts none at all, by Orbit's own documentation.

The price on the box is not the system

Almost every sensor here is an add-on: the ECOWITT WH51 needs a gateway, THIRDREALITY needs a Zigbee hub, RAINPOINT needs a WiFi hub *and* timer, Soildrops needs its ~$90 controller, GARDENA needs its smart Gateway. And the sub-$20 analog probes below them can't trigger irrigation, log a reading or send an alert at all — they are a one-time dial. Budget the system, not the sensor.

Where you bury it decides everything

A probe at 1 inch reads evaporation, not roots — put it at 4-6 in for turf and deeper for trees, because one sensor at root depth beats three shallow ones. Rated wireless range is line-of-sight best case: buried, or behind brick and stucco, expect 50-80% less. And use capacitive, never resistive — resistive probes electrolyze and corrode within weeks in wet soil.
