The assistant is the subscription
You are buying a service with a speaker attached. Alexa+ is $19.99/mo standalone and free only if you already pay for Prime ($139/yr); Google's Gemini Live, familiar-face alerts and 30-day history need Home Premium at $10/mo once the six-month trial ends. Over three years that is $720 and $360 — more than any speaker on this page.
Lock-in is the real price
Routines, device groups and voice-purchase settings do not migrate between Alexa, Google Home and Apple Home, and stereo pairing and multi-room only work inside one brand — you cannot pair an Echo to a Sonos. Speakers that also talk AirPlay 2, Chromecast or Spotify Connect (Sonos, JBL, Denon, HomePod) survive a platform switch as audio devices; Echo and Google speakers largely do not.
No Echo listens locally any more
Amazon removed the "Do Not Send Voice Recordings" option on 28 March 2025 — every Echo request is now processed in Amazon's cloud, and anyone who had that setting on was switched to "Don't Save Recordings" and lost Alexa Voice ID. A hardware mic button mutes the mic; it does not bring processing home. Only the mic-free Sonos Era 100 SL ($189) has no microphone fitted at all.
