The model number is the product
Orbit sells two near-identically-named 4-Port XD timers: the 24639 at $129.98 has the Wi-Fi hub in the box, the 24634 at $74.99 does not — and without a hub it is a Bluetooth valve you have to stand next to. Netro does the same thing, selling the Pixie Z1 both as a hub kit and as an add-on timer that is useless alone. Match the model number, outlet count and hub-in-box status, never the family name.
"Bluetooth smart" is not smart
The Hunter BTT, the Gardena Smart Water Control and the Orbit XD 24634 have roughly 30–50 ft of range and no remote control or weather skip at all once you leave the yard. They are app-configured mechanical timers. If you want to water while you are away — the whole reason most people buy one — you need Wi-Fi, Thread or a hub model.
The WaterSense rebate that isn't
EPA WaterSense labels weather-based and soil-moisture *controllers*, not hose-end faucet timers. Checked 2026-08-09, Orbit's own labelled catalogue lists the 21006/21027 Wi-Fi hubs and its in-ground XR/8/12/16-station controllers — no faucet timer — and Rachio's own hose-timer page makes no WaterSense claim. Retailer filters and review sites are far looser than the manufacturers' certification pages, so verify the exact model on your utility's list before counting on $50–$200 back.
