The weight rating has a floor
Every spec sheet leads with the ceiling; the number that ruins a setup is the minimum. Floors here run 4 lb on the LX Pro, 6 on the Humanscale M8, 6.5 on the Trace, 7 on the classic LX, 4.8 on the Dell MSA20 and 20 lb on the HX — hang a panel under the minimum and the spring pushes it upward no matter how you set the tension. Weigh your monitor without its factory stand: that is the number the arm sees.
Your desktop decides the arm
Clamp ranges vary more than buyers expect. Ergotron clamps cover 0.4-2.4 in, the Dell MSA20 stops at 2.1 in, and only the VIVO reaches 3.3 in. Glass tops and anything under 0.6 in must be grommet-mounted or backed with a steel plate — a clamp cracks glass and dents thin laminate.
The extras are not in the price
Every arm here needs VESA 75x75 or 100x100 mm holes (the HX goes to 200x200). An iMac and several Dell and Samsung consumer panels have none and need a brand-specific adapter bracket; a 49-inch Odyssey G9 needs Ergotron's HD Tilt Pivot accessory or the HD Pivot SKU (45-647-224/216); a glass desk needs a backing plate; the Jarvis laptop tray is a paid configuration. None of that is included.
