A ring is the wrong shape for most video. It stamps a doughnut catchlight in your eyes and, as lights go, it is a small and relatively hard source. For talking-head, interview or product work a panel or softbox of the same wattage is the better key light — which is exactly where Elgato went when it killed its own ring. The ring earns its keep on beauty and close-up work and nowhere else.

Phantom brightness
Brands publish lumens or lux at whatever distance flatters them, and an "equivalent wattage" claim is marketing, not photometry. Only lux quoted at the same distance compares — 3,300 lux at 0.5m is a real number; an equivalent-wattage figure is not.
The spec sheet lies
Treat an unverified CRI 95+ claim on a sub-$40 light as marketing — that whole tier publishes no CRI figure at all. TLCI matters more for video and only the better brands print it. And check the dimming: PWM-dimmed budget lights band on camera at high shutter speeds, which few brands disclose.
Zombie flagships
Two 2025 favorites are gone. Elgato's own page now reads "Ring Light is no longer available" and the Razer Ring Light 12" has left the US line-up — yet guides published as late as May 2026 still recommend them. Third-party listings at inflated prices carry no manufacturer support pathway.
