Open-back means zero isolation, both ways. Everyone in the room hears your music and you hear them. These are for a quiet room you occupy alone — never an office, a shared room, a dorm or a commute. That is the design working as intended, not a defect you can pad your way out of.
The amplifier is part of the price
Three picks are 300 ohm (HD 600, HD 660S2, HD 800 S) and two are 90 dB per mW planars (LCD-5s, HE1000 Stealth); none of the five reaches usable, undistorted volume from a phone or laptop jack. Budget $130-$230 for a desktop DAC/amp on the Sennheisers and $300-$400 on the flagship planars — Audeze specifies a minimum >100 mW and recommends >500 mW for the LCD-5s.
Small batches, quiet supersessions
Boutique open-backs are built in small runs: on 2026-08-08 the Audeze LCD-5s, the Audeze MM-500 and the Sennheiser HD 660S2 each showed a single unit on Amazon US and the HD 800 S three, while audeze.com listed the LCD-5s out of stock. Two 2025-era models were also retired — the Audeze LCD-5 (legacy, replaced by the LCD-5s) and the Grado SR80x (discontinued, replaced by the Classic Series SR80 at $175) — and both still sit on marketplace listings at a premium.
