Not every e-reader takes a pen
The standard Kindle Paperwhite, Kobo Clara, and base Kindle have no pen input at all — only the Scribe lineup, Kobo Sage/Libra Colour/Elipsa, reMarkable, Boox, and Supernote accept a stylus. Buy the wrong body and there's no upgrade path.
The pen is often sold separately
Kobo Sage and Libra Colour need the Kobo Stylus 2 at ~$70 extra, and a bare reMarkable Marker runs $79–$129 — the pen, not just the tablet, is the real price. Kindle Scribe, Kobo Elipsa 2E, Boox, and the Paper Pro Move include one.
