Measure nose to tail-base and floor to head, add 2-4 inches, and check the dog can stand without touching the top, turn around, and lie down fully stretched. An oversized crate undermines housetraining.
"Crash tested" is per size, not per brand
The Center for Pet Safety certifies specific sizes. As of August 2026 that is the Gunner G1 in Small/Medium/Intermediate, the Lucky Duck Lucky Kennel in Medium/Intermediate/Large and the Cabela's GunDog Kennel — so the Gunner G1 Large is not certified. No wire, soft-sided, furniture or aluminium crate here has been crash tested at all, and any rating only holds when the crate is strapped down with the maker's own tie-downs.
The latch is what fails, then the wire
Latch security is the number one real-world failure mode on wire crates — buy a bolt the dog cannot slide open from inside. Then check gauge: budget 18-gauge wire bends under a large or anxious dog where 20-gauge and thicker resists. On arrival, inspect bar spacing for a gap that could trap a jaw or paw, and run a hand over the welds.
