The BIFMA gap
ANSI/BIFMA X5.1 — the standard nearly every office chair cites — is validated against a 253 lb occupant. X5.11 is the large-occupant standard (253-400 lbs, seat at least 22 inches wide), and not one chair on this page publishes it. Treat every 400-600 lb headline as a manufacturer claim and size 50-100 lbs above your own weight.
Capacity is not fit
A 500 lb rating on a 20.5-inch pan still doesn't fit you. Standard chairs are 18-20 inches across; big and tall needs 22-26 inches. Measure your hip width seated, add 2 inches, and use that as the hard filter — before you look at any capacity number.
The warranty exclusion
