The pint number was restandardised
DOE moved the test to a 65°F chamber in 2020 — the same hardware once sold as a 70-pint is now rated 50-pint. And a listing shouting "137 pints" or "MAX 120 Pint" is quoting saturation output at 95°F / 90% RH, not a DOE rating. Every unit here is a DOE 50-pint (or 20-pint) machine. Compare DOE numbers only.
Compressors quit in the cold
Every compressor dehumidifier struggles below 40-45°F, and one without auto-defrost ices over and stops long before it fails. Published minimums separate these picks more sharply than pints do: Hisense 38°F, AlorAir 36°F, Frigidaire 41°F.
The most-recalled appliance in CPSC history
Roughly 2.5 million Gree and 3.4 million Midea dehumidifiers built around 2011-2014 — sold as Frigidaire, GE, Danby, SoleusAir and Kenmore — were recalled for fire risk, with a stop-use warning reissued in August 2023 after four deaths.
