Fit ledger — need → measured evidence

SAME COLOR PANEL
Identical Kaleido 3 — 300 PPI text / 150 PPI color, the same panel as the $258 Libra Colour and the $250 Kindle Colorsoft.
UNDER $250
$180 typical — $70 of headroom and the cheapest color e-ink sold; the Libra costs $78 more for the same picture.
POCKETABLE
174 g at 6" — the lightest color reader on this card, with IPX8 for the bath or the pool.
WEEKS PER CHARGE
42-day battery — the longest run time of any color e-reader compared here.
FREE LIBRARY BOOKS
Native OverDrive/Libby — the same Kobo library integration as the Libra; Kindle dropped Libby in 2024.

The catch — co-equal billing, always

Six inches is the wrong size for comics. Two-page manga spreads do not work at 6", and there are no page-turn buttons and no stylus. Worse, when the 7" Kindle Colorsoft hits its frequent ~$199 promo the real saving shrinks to about $20.

Dealbreaker? Runner-up №1 is the 7" Kindle whenever it's at $199 ↓

Traps — this verdict avoids

Why the Kobo Clara Colour is right for you

It avoids every trap below — and for just me, under $250, it is the pick because it delivers:

Trap 01

Half-resolution color

Every color e-reader sold in 2026 uses E Ink Kaleido 3: crisp 300 PPI text, but color drops to 150 PPI and roughly 4,096 muted colors — faded magazine print, not a phone screen. E Ink's richer Gallery 3 has shipped in zero consumer e-readers since its 2022 reveal, so there is no better panel to hold out for.

Trap 02

Ecosystem is the real choice

The panels are identical across brands, so the lock-in is the actual decision. Kindle Colorsoft cannot sideload EPUB without conversion and Amazon dropped Libby in 2024; only Kobo borrows library books natively. Migrating a large Kindle library out later is not realistic.

Trap 03

Dead-generation listings

Boox's 10.3" color line turned over twice in a year — the Note Air3 C is discontinued and delisted from Boox's own store, yet third-party sellers still list dead 3C stock. Confirm a listing is a Note Air4 C or 5 C before buying.
