"Open-ear" mostly isn't bone conduction
Almost every 2024-2026 open-ear launch — OpenFit Air, OpenFit 2, OpenDots ONE, Bose Ultra Open, Soundcore AeroFit — aims a miniature speaker at an uncovered ear canal instead of vibrating your skull. 2 of the 12 models compared here are air conduction, not bone conduction. Shokz itself now publishes that OpenDots ONE is not bone conduction. Air sounds better and leaks more; bone survives water and works under a helmet. Look for a transducer that presses on the cheekbone.
Sweat-rated is not swim-rated
Bluetooth does not propagate through water, so a Bluetooth-only headphone is dead the moment you push off the wall — even if it survives the dunk. Only IP68/IPX8 models with onboard MP3 storage work while swimming: OpenSwim Pro, H2O Tri 2 Pro, Mojawa Run Plus, HaptiFit Terra. The 2021 micro-USB OpenRun is now Currently Unavailable while the live listing is the USB-C revision at ~$130; OpenRun Pro 2 standard and Mini bands are separate SKUs at $180 and $177; the outgoing Suunto Wing gen 1 still sells at ~$109 beside the $179 Wing 2. Aftershokz-branded Aeropex and Titanium listings are pre-2021 stock under the company's old name.
