The answer — one pick, priced

Gorilla Tag

$0
free on Quest and PC VR · cosmetics are the only paid element
$80 under your budget

The one game in our 16-game shortlist that costs nothing — the breakout multiplayer phenomenon on Quest and PC VR, and a genuine workout for four.

Fit ledger — need → measured evidence

FOUR PLAYERS, $0
Free on Quest and PC VR — the only outright-free game on the shortlist; cosmetics are the sole paid element.
EVERYONE AT ONCE
Online multiplayer tag — the whole household drops into the same chaotic lobby.
BURNS ENERGY
It's a genuine workout — physical arm-swing movement is the entire locomotion system.
RUNS ON WHAT YOU OWN
Quest and PC VR — and standalone Quest 3 / 3S is the largest install base in VR, so it's where the social games concentrate.
UNDER $80
$0 — the whole budget stays with you, which matters when four people each need a headset.

The catch — co-equal billing, always

It will make new players sick. Fast arm-swing locomotion earns Gorilla Tag the lowest comfort rating of any game here, and it is explicitly not the gentlest entry point for anyone new to VR. There's no PSVR2 version either — Quest and PC VR only.

Traps — this verdict avoids

Why the Gorilla Tag is right for you

It avoids every trap below — and for family of 4, under $80, it is the pick because it delivers:

Four players, $0 Everyone at once Burns energy Runs on what you own Under $80
Trap 01

Exclusive to the wrong headset

Platform exclusivity is the rule, not the exception. Half-Life: Alyx is PC VR only, Batman: Arkham Shadow and Asgard's Wrath 2 are Quest-only, and the Resident Evil 4 and Microsoft Flight Simulator VR modes are PSVR2-only. Confirm the headset before buying any exclusive.

Trap 02

Locomotion roulette

Motion sickness varies by player and by game, and the wrong first title ends the hobby. Fast smooth locomotion — Gorilla Tag's arm-swing movement, physics sandboxes like Bonelab — is the worst offender; teleport, cockpit and room-scale designs are far more comfortable. Build VR legs first.

Trap 03

Buying the wrong VR SKU

Hitman's standalone Part One VR Edition is $40 for 6 locations; the base game (often ~$28) plus the $10 VR Access upgrade unlocks all 22 locations for less. And Resident Evil 4, Village and No Man's Sky charge nothing for their VR modes — you're only buying the flat game.
