Fit ledger — need → measured evidence

LIGHTEST TO HOLD
158 g — the lightest and most compact Kindle ever made, 53 g under the 211 g Paperwhite.
TEXT STILL SHARP
300 ppi, identical to the $160 Paperwhite and a large step up from the 167 ppi screens on pre-2024 base models.
UNDER $150
$110 for the ad-supported ASIN — $40 of headroom, with the ad-free version at $129.99.
BRIGHT ENOUGH
Front light is 25% brighter than the previous base Kindle — but there is no amber warm setting.
ROOM FOR BOOKS
16GB holds thousands of titles — the same storage as the standard Paperwhite.

The catch — co-equal billing, always

No waterproofing, no warm light. This Kindle carries no IP rating at all, so no bath, pool or beach reading, there is no amber night mode, and the battery is 6 weeks rather than 12. It is the cheapest way in, not the one you keep longest.

Dealbreaker? Runner-up №1 adds IPX8 and warm light for $50 ↓

Traps — this verdict avoids

Why the Kindle (2024) is right for you

It avoids every trap below — and for just me, under $150, it is the pick because it delivers:

Lightest to hold Text still sharp Under $150 Bright enough Room for books
Trap 01

The $20 ad tax

Ad-supported and ad-free Kindles are different ASINs $20 apart, not a setting. The quoted $109.99 Kindle and $159.99 Paperwhite are the "with Special Offers" units that put sponsored art on the lock screen; Signature Editions, all three Kids models and every Scribe ship ad-free.

Trap 02

The library isn't yours

Amazon removed Download & Transfer via USB for DRM-protected purchases in 2025. The DRM-free EPUB/PDF download added January 20, 2026 covers only titles publishers left DRM-free, never Kindle Unlimited borrows — and Kindles still do not read EPUB natively. A Kobo library travels; a Kindle library does not.

Trap 03

One generation from replacement

Amazon confirmed on July 14, 2026 that every current Kindle is refreshed later this year with screw-secured, user-replaceable batteries to meet EU rules effective early 2027, plus faster chips and more RAM. The exposure is largest on the $429.99–$679.99 Scribes that only began shipping in June.
