Fit ledger — need → measured evidence

NOTHING TO WAIT FOR
The standard iPhone 18 slips to spring 2027 — this stays Apple's current base flagship for roughly 7 more months.
PRO-GRADE SCREEN
120Hz ProMotion at 3,000 nits with always-on — the first non-Pro iPhone to match the Pro display.
EVERYDAY CAMERA
Dual 48MP rear plus an 18MP Center Stage front camera; the Pro gap is telephoto and low light, not daylight.
STORAGE THAT LASTS
256GB base — double the iPhone 16 — rising to a 512GB ceiling.
ALL-DAY BATTERY
12h 47m of active use in Tom's Guide testing, against Apple's 30h video-playback rating.
KEEPS WORKING FOR YEARS
iOS 27 drops no models (iPhone 11 and later) and Apple ships roughly 6-8 years of major updates; budget $99 for an out-of-warranty battery.

The catch — co-equal billing, always

Amazon is the wrong door this month. The one live new, unlocked 256GB listing is a marketplace offer at $911 — $82 above the $829 Apple charges for the identical phone — because Apple's own new-condition listings read "Currently unavailable" four weeks before the iPhone 18 Pro launch. Buy it from Apple direct, at list.

Why the iPhone 17 is right for you

It avoids every trap below — and for just me, no budget cap, it is the pick because it delivers:

Trap 01

The four-week window

Apple is expected to introduce the iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max in early September 2026 — about four weeks away. Paying full price for a 17 Pro or 17 Pro Max this month is poor timing. The rule stops at the Pro tier: the standard iPhone 18 and 18e are held to spring 2027, so the iPhone 17 and 17e stay current for roughly 7 more months.

Trap 02

Amazon's iPhone aisle

A month before the refresh, most of Apple's own new-condition Amazon listings read Currently unavailable, and the in-stock buy boxes are Amazon Renewed units — a different product at a different price basis. The few live new offers are marketplace sellers above MSRP: $1,429 against Apple's $1,199 on the 17 Pro Max, $911 against $829 on the iPhone 17. Buy new at MSRP from Apple direct.

Trap 03

The config is the price

Storage and lock status are separate SKUs, and the base tier moved between generations. Unlocked ("connect to any carrier later") adds $30 on the iPhone 17, 16 and 16 Plus. iPhone 17, 17e and Air start at 256GB; only the prior-gen 16 and 16 Plus still start at 128GB — which is why a $729 iPhone 16 buys less phone than a $599 iPhone 17e.
