Fit ledger — need → measured evidence

COLOUR-CRITICAL WORK
Ultra Retina XDR OLED — 1,000 nits sustained and 1,600 nits HDR peak, the best mobile display for photo and video editing.
EXTERNAL MONITOR
Thunderbolt / USB 4 drives an external display and fast external storage — the Air has neither.
SMOOTH PEN AND SCROLL
ProMotion 10–120 Hz adaptive refresh, against the Air's fixed 60 Hz.
HEADROOM TO SPARE
M5 with up to 45% faster GPU than M4; the 1 TB and 2 TB models carry 16 GB RAM instead of 12 GB.
STORAGE FROM THE START
Starts at 256 GB — double the Air's 128 GB, so part of the $391 gap is storage, not tier.

The catch — co-equal billing, always

You are paying $391 for the screen, not the speed. The M5 is already more powerful than iPadOS uses, and most people will never feel it next to the Air's M4 — the premium is the OLED panel, ProMotion and Thunderbolt. Add the 11-inch Magic Keyboard at $299 and the Pencil Pro at $129 and a working Pro is a $1,548 setup.

Traps — this verdict avoids

Why the iPad Pro 11-inch M5 is right for you

It avoids every trap below — and for anyone, no budget cap, it is the pick because it delivers:

Colour-critical work External monitor Smooth pen and scroll Headroom to spare Storage from the start
Trap 01

The wrong Pencil just won't work

Apple Pencil compatibility is model-locked, and the wrong one simply does not write. iPad Pro, Air and mini take the Apple Pencil Pro ($129); the base iPad takes only the Apple Pencil USB-C ($79), and older Pencil generations are not universally compatible. Accessory prices did not move in the June 2026 increase.

Trap 02

The config is the price

Every price here is the 128 GB Wi-Fi model (256 GB Wi-Fi on the Pros). Wi-Fi + Cellular is a separate SKU at roughly +$150–$200, and storage is not expandable on any iPad — you choose the tier once, at purchase. "Renewed" listings rank high in Amazon search and are not the product priced here.

Trap 03

Every price moved on 2026-06-25

Apple raised every iPad by $100–$200 in one day (base $349→$449, mini $499→$599, Air 11-inch $599→$749, Pro 13-inch $1,299→$1,499) with no hardware change. Any guide or cached price written before that date understates every iPad by at least $100. Amazon has not fully followed: it currently runs $20–$99 under Apple's new list on every model.
