Fit ledger — need → measured evidence

BIG PROPERTY, 9+ ZONES
12 independent stations, expandable further with add-on modules — the only pick here designed to grow past the zone count printed on the box.
LIVES OUTDOORS
Ships in an outdoor-rated enclosure. Four of the seven controllers compared here are indoor-rated only and need a separate weatherproof box on an exterior wall.
CATCHES LEAKS
Optional flow monitoring flags a broken line or a stuck valve in hardware. Nothing else on this page does leak detection at all — the rest just water on a smarter schedule.
SCHEDULES WITHOUT THE APP
Hydrawise 7-day predictive forecasting plus a built-in touchscreen, so the schedule is editable at the wall rather than only on a phone.
KNOW THE RUNNING COST
The Hydrawise Home Plan is free. The optional Enthusiast Plan — extra weather stations, longer retention — is $60/year, the only genuine subscription in this comparison.
BUY THE CURRENT MODEL
Hunter discontinued the older HC line, including the HC-600i, in January 2023 and names the PRO-HC as its replacement. Listings still selling an HC-600i are old stock.

The catch — co-equal billing, always

You are paying $205 over a 12-zone Netro for features most homeowners never touch. Contractor dashboards, flow sensing and an outdoor enclosure earn their money if a landscaper manages the system or the box has to hang outside. If neither is true, the Netro runs the same 12 stations, WaterSense labelled, with lifetime free cloud, for $100 — and Hunter is the one brand here that will try to sell you a yearly plan.

Traps — this verdict avoids

Why the Hunter PRO-HC, 12-Station is right for you

It avoids every trap below — and for family of 4, no budget cap, it is the pick because it delivers:

Big property, 9+ zones Lives outdoors Catches leaks Schedules without the app Know the running cost
Trap 01

The zone count is the SKU

Every price in this category is tied to one zone count and one enclosure. A Rachio 3 8-zone is $173, the 16-zone is a different ASIN at about $247; Netro's 6-zone is $79.99 and its 12-zone $99.99; B-hyve ships indoor, outdoor and hose-tap units under near-identical names. Count the valve wires in your existing box before you shop, not after.

Trap 02

Four of these seven can't go outside

The Rachio 3, Yardian Pro, Netro and RAINPOINT are indoor-rated only — a garage or basement wall. Only the Orbit B-hyve XR (IP54), Rain Bird ARC8 and Hunter PRO-HC mount on an exterior wall as sold, and Aeon Matrix doesn't sell an outdoor housing for the Yardian at all. Buying the indoor unit for an outside wall is the expensive mistake here.

Trap 03

WaterSense is per model, and it's worth $80-$200

The EPA label — not the brand — is what water utilities condition rebates on, commonly $80-$200 per controller, which routinely exceeds the price gap between two picks on this page. Six of these seven are labelled; the $70 RAINPOINT is not, so in a rebate district the $100 Netro can cost less net than the cheaper box.
