Insta360 X5

$550
back at list after the June discount expired · camera only
no budget ceiling

Still the best 360 camera across our 12 sources — nobody has to aim it, and the invisible-selfie-stick shot puts the whole family in frame instead of behind it.

Fit ledger — need → measured evidence

NOBODY HAS TO AIM
Dual 1/1.28-inch sensors (144% larger than the X4) capture the whole sphere at 8K30 — you choose where the camera was pointing afterwards.
EVERYONE IN SHOT
The invisible selfie stick effect produces smooth third-person group footage no traditional action camera can replicate.
A WHOLE DAY OUT
208 minutes of battery — the longest of any 360 camera here, against roughly 100 min on the DJI Osmo 360 and ~66 min at 8K on the GoPro MAX2.
PASSED AROUND
A first-of-its-kind replaceable lens system — swap scratched or cracked glass in the field instead of replacing the camera.
POOL AND SEA
15 m (49 ft) waterproof — deeper than the Osmo 360's 10 m and triple the GoPro MAX2's 5 m.

The catch — co-equal billing, always

360 footage is not footage until you have edited it. Every single clip must be reframed in software before you can publish it — a recurring time cost that simply does not exist on a Hero-line, Osmo Action or Ace Pro camera. And the June discount is gone: at $550 the X5 is back at list, $251 more than the GoPro MAX2 and $161 more than the DJI Osmo 360, so it is only worth the premium if the editing workflow and the battery are the deciding factors.

Dealbreaker? Runner-up №3 skips the reframing step entirely ↓

Traps — this verdict avoids

Why the Insta360 X5 is right for you

It avoids every trap below — and for family of 4, no cap, it is the pick because it delivers:

Nobody has to aim Everyone in shot A whole day out Passed around Pool and sea
Trap 01

Bundles, not bodies

The bare GoPro HERO13 Black listing on Amazon went "Currently unavailable" in July 2026, so the buyable configuration is the $409 2-battery bundle, not the $349 body quoted in June. Bundle-vs-body gaps of $60-$200 are routine here — the AKASO $119 includes two batteries and a 40 m housing, the Insta360 GO Ultra $450 includes the Action Pod. Every price on this page names the exact configuration it buys.

Trap 02

Quoted battery is a best case

Manufacturer runtimes assume the least demanding setting. Cold weather alone cuts battery 30-50%, and in -10°C 4K60 testing the Osmo Action 6 recorded 120 minutes against its 240-minute claim, the HERO13 Black 80 and the Ace Pro 2 76. The GoPro MAX2 manages roughly 66 minutes at 8K.

Trap 03

The card and the mounts are extra

8K writes 200-400 MB per minute and needs a V30/V60 microSD — none of these cameras includes one. Mount ecosystems are a real switching cost too: GoPro's finger mount, DJI's magnetic quick-release and Insta360's system are not cross-compatible without adapters.
